La Costa and Aviara, California are two stunning resort communities nestled within the
greater community of Carlsbad in Southern California. They are located approximately
35 miles north of downtown San Diego. Diverse water environments account for the
unique character of the area, with the beautiful Buena Vista Lagoon to the north,
the Batiquitos Lagoon to the south, the Aqua Hedionda Lagoon in the middle, and the
expansive Pacific Ocean on the west. The total population for all of Carlsbad is
91,000 residents.
La Costa is situated in the eastern part of Carlsbad just east of the magnificent
Batiquitos Lagoon. The city has a total population of 23,157 residents and a median
household income of $74,850. This is a world famous resort and residential community
with rolling hills, picturesque canyons, and breathtaking views that stretch all the
way to the Pacific Ocean. The famous La Costa Resort Hotel draws the rich and famous
from around the world. Currently undergoing a $55 million renaissance, it hosts major
tennis and golf tournaments each year. Guests and club members can enjoy two 18-hole
P.G.A. championship golf courses, 23 tennis courts, three swimming pools, five
restaurants, three lounges, a movie theater, and an 8,000 square-foot ballroom.
The hills and canyons of La Costa offer the perfect backdrop for a variety of
estates, luxury homes, and condominiums. Many are second homes that offer retreats
for people from around the world. The last of the original land holdings are now
being developed into new master-planned, residential communities. The first of these,
La Costa Valley, was built out in 2002. It features parks, open space, walking
trails, community recreation facilities, and a day-care center for children. Young
families and retired people alike are attracted to the casual lifestyle, convenient
location and fine schools of the new La Costa neighborhoods. The median price for a
single-family dwelling is $581,000 and the median price for a condo is $318,000.
Aviara is also an exclusive resort community right in the heart of the lush hills of
southern Carlsbad overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the Batiquitos Lagoon. This
award-winning master-planned community is west of La Costa and has a population of
4,925 residents. Aviara is known as one of the most exquisite and successful
residential real estate developments in all of Southern California and is anchored
by the elegant five-star Four Seasons Resort Aviara. Community members enjoy a high
standard of living with the median household income being $99,199.
After years of planning, the first neighborhood named Pavona, was developed and
ready in 1989. The final community, Tesoro, will be completed in 2004 making a total
of 2,025 Aviara homes in 21 individual neighborhoods. Residents enjoy immaculately
landscaped homes in a variety of architectural styles including luxury executive
homes, gated condominiums and lavish custom built homes. Real estate has been a
tremendous investment with a very low resale turnover. The median price for a single
family home here is $699,500 and for a condo it is $446,000.
Miles of sidewalks make these communities the perfect place for strolling. Hikers,
runners, and bicyclists take to the scenic Batiquitos Nature Trail on evenings and
weekends. It provides a beautiful getaway overlooking the Batiquitos Lagoon and the
Aviara Golf Course. For shopping, the Carlsbad Company Stores combine fashionable
factory-outlet stores, restaurants, and art galleries. On the city's north boundary
is Plaza Camino Real, a huge regional shopping mall with all the national department
and specialty stores. The spectacular 64,000 square-foot Carlsbad City Library with a
performing arts center and art gallery has become a center of community activity and
events.
Palomar Airport hosts private planes and commuter aircraft from United and America
West airlines. Two Coaster stations provide trains that speed commuters downtown and
to destinations north. The newer, fast-growing industrial parks near the airport
house numerous Carlsbad software, recreation, biomedical, and high-tech companies.
Agriculture is important, with well-known fields of brilliant flowers, strawberries,
and tomatoes. The area is home to Callaway, Cobra, Titleist, and Taylor Made, all of
which have contributed to the area's reputation as the "Golf Capital of the World."
Like all the areas of Carlsbad, La Costa schools are excellent and have an outstanding
reputation. Younger children attend either the Encinitas Union School District or
the San Marcos Unified School District while the San Dieguito Union High School
District serves the high school students. Parents are proud of the award-winning
Aviara schools. Younger children attend the Aviara Oaks Elementary and Middle School
while Carlsbad High School serves the older set. There are also many fine private
schools conveniently located throughout the area.
